About Safion

From national-lab science to operating industrial platforms.

Safion was founded by scientists and engineers from the National Laboratory of the Rockies (formerly the National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Safion translates fundamental science into practical systems with a clear route through pilot operation, commercial economics and partner deployment.

Two technology platforms

Different markets. The same commercial discipline.

Both platforms begin with a difficult decarbonization bottleneck and work backward from the requirements of the industrial market that receives the product.

Biotechnology platform

Cocura Oil™

An extracellular C10–C12 polyol-lipid platform designed for straightforward recovery, self-acidifying fermentation and mature hydrotreating infrastructure. The C10–C12 chain length is ideally suited for conversion into SAF-range hydrocarbons.

Catalytic platform

Renewable Solvents

A dedicated route to lower-carbon, ultra-high-purity acetonitrile with a modular path toward the solvents that dominate pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Commercial architecture

Partner-led deployment

Safion pairs de-risked core technology with existing assets, established refining and distribution networks, and market-backed scale-up.

Research recognition

Foundational work was published in Science and recognized with an R&D 100 Award.

Safion platform development

National-lab research was translated into company-owned process, purification and biotechnology programs.

Operating pilot systems

Safion built and commissioned its Louisville pilot facility and produced material from both technology platforms.
